Dude, this is NOT wank, this is so not even close to wank. This is a giant, middle finger with a heaping dose of fuck you with sprinkles on top!

Amazon.com has begun the process of marking any and all GLBT books (including gay YA titles) as 'ADULT', which strips their sales rankings numbers and, in the process, kills sales. The list of pulled books include such scintillating and scandalous tomes as Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Brokeback Mountain, the Kushiel's Dart series, Marion Zimmer Bradly's The Catch Trap and, I shit you not, Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and A World Without Rape.

As pointed out, this process is NOT being done to straight adult oriented content. One can still easily find titles such as Playboy with their sales rankings still attached. It's discrimination at its lowest.

It should also be noted that Amazon hasn't stripped the sales rankings of GLBT DVD's. Although I suspect that won't remain for much longer.

It all starts here, I think, but this one should be read. http://markprobst.livejournal.com/
Here's the [livejournal.com profile] meta_writer list of topic related links, growing by the hour - http://community.livejournal.com/meta_writer/11560.html
And here's a comprehensive (but still incomplete) list of known books with their sales rankings removed - http://community.livejournal.com/meta_writer/11992.html

Right now, I'm am in the process of removing my 'Wish List' from Amazon. After which I'm going to delete my profile all together. If that's what they think of me as a consumer, a deviant to be hidden away, then I'll take my fucking money somewhere else!

ETA: (Because I'm an idiot) There's already an online petition, which can be found here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/in-protest-at-amazons-new-adult-policy

I saw, and I posted to my blog (website blog, not LJ) about it. It's not just me, it's every PD author that's gotten the ranking cut out. It's absolute discrimination, no doubt about it. When you label Ellen Degeneres' biography as adult, you cannot justify your actions with a reasonable argument.

It cannot stand. Have you seen the petition?

Doh! I completely forgot about the petition. Although, admittedly, I'm not a big fan of online petitions but I'll still add the link.

I understand the anti-petition thing. One reason is because if I signed every petition that came along, I'd never do anything else. But still, I think this one deserves being passed around to as many people as possible. As it is, I'm telling people to go elsewhere to buy my books.

I seriously thought it was just me. A few days ago I went to amazon.com (on my cell phone) to look @ some of the reviews for "Love on location" by Lisa Girolami >> A book I was debating whether to buy...and couldn't find ANYTHING. Mind you, just a few weeks prior it was there and now it's suddenly vanished? I thought it was a glitch, but now thanks to you I know differently.

This is total discrimination against the LGBT community! And to think I spent over 40 bucks on amazon a month ago... 40 bucks that I really shouldn't have... Me thinks I'll be going elsewhere to by my books. Thank you for this

There's nothing like blind moral outrage to stop people from thinking rationally. ;)
