BSG Squee!! And a minor rant!
Apr. 27th, 2006 10:40 amAccording to Gateworld, SciFi and Ron Moore are in the works for Caprica, a BSG prequel.
"The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot -- a Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas (the family of William Adama, who will one day become the commander of the Battlestar Galactica) Caprica weaves corporate intrigue, techno-action and sexual politics into television's first science fiction family saga."
First, squee! Although, it kinda sounds like Romeo & Juliet in Space. Which, considering this is coming from the guy responsible for Roswell, probably is. What I wanna know are they gonna cast a latino actor to play a young Edward James Olmos, or are they just going to quietly forget that, you know, Edward James Olmos isn't white.
If I have one quibble with BSG it's *that*. Sure, I like Jamie Bamber as Lee. I don't think he's spectacular in the role..other than his arms. But, everytime I see Lee, there's a part of me that's thinking "there's no way in Hell that's EJO's son". Which is part of my conspiracy theory that the casting of a white Lee was a concession to the network's 'cuz they were all like "hey, we let you turn Starbuck into a girl, there's no way in Hell we're gonna let the hotshot Lee NOT be white. 'Cuz, as ya'll know, that coveted 18-35 white males demographic can't possibly watch anything that doesn't have a white guy in it".
I know I'm setting myself up to be horribly disappointed but the idea of a new scifi series set around a non-caucasian family just makes me burst with squee! And, on the whole, my irritation with BSG and race is minor in comparison to, say, Atlantis, or the clusterfuck that was Earthsea!!
Hell, maybe this time, we can find out what happened to all the damn homosexuals on the Twelve Colonies!!
